North Olean History - Ted Howes, Enchanted Mountains

ENCHANTED MOUNTAINS

The late Ted Howes in the early 1960s wrote the poem “These are Enchanted Mountains” as a result of his love of the beauty of this area of western New York, especially of the City of Olean.

It was during his job as head of advertising for Loblaws in Olean that he became enthralled with the beauty of the hills surrounding Olean. So much so that after writing his poem, he read it to the members of the Olean Chamber of Commerce. The result was the officials of the Chamber requested the city to adopt the name “Enchanted Mountains.”

Today, the “Enchanted Mountains” has become the Cattaraugus County Tourism brand name for the county.
