SOCIAL LIFE IN NORTH OLEAN IN 1920 thru 1940


In the 1920’s through the 1940’s, the newspaper had a social page that printed the birthdays, card parties, showers etc that were submitted by their readers. The following are a sample of some of those articles about the social life in North Olean. Lets go back to a day in their life.

Miss Mary Kubiak and Miss Anna Kopec entertained at a surprise birthday party on Thursday evening, February 4, 1926, in honor of Miss Stella Banka at her home on 1120 N. Union Street, North Olean. The evening was spent in games, music and dancing. Refreshments were served. Miss Banka was the recipient of many gifts. The guests present were; the Misses Florence Firos, Mary Metka, Agnes Sal, Viola Micek, Mary Lazar, Catherine Piechota, Mary Zremska and Florence Pikulski.

Forty three Polish women were entertained at a card party at the home of Mrs. Paul Kendzior of 1615 Walnut Street, Tuesday evening, February 2, 1926. Those present were Mesdames Bateski, Lilza, Germack, Rosella Piechota, Mabla, Benca, Hanobik, Brizski, Wojick, Martha Padlo, Nellie Padlo, Suda, Sal, Harenda, Mary Piechota, Jonak, Srodowa, Konieczna, Rogozenski, Malick, Sakala, Smith, Fusiara, Pikulska, S. Kubiak, Predgo, Strucker, Klotz, Mazur, Murowska, Kubic, Smucinska, Rucinska, Splawska, Balon, L. Piechota, Lazarz, Odwier, Butinski. Those serving the guest were: the Misses Stella Piechota, Sophie Kendzior, Rose Kendzior, Helen Kukulka, Catherine Strucker and Nellie Padlo.

Mrs. Edna Stavish, 303 Elm St. was honored on April 20, 1927, with a surprise birthday party given by Mrs. Eva Kubic, Mrs. Anna Mazur and Mrs. Anna Kloc. The house was decorated with spring flowers. Games and music formed the evening entertainment. Refreshment were served to fourteen guests. Mrs. Stavish received many useful presents. The guests were: Madames Mary Fidurko, Josephine Batorzynska, Clara Cuiryk, Victoria Wojar, Mary Szanszrala, Julia Wojar, Josephine Kujawa, Veronica Murowska and Buelah Lipinska.

Mrs. Leo Domboski entertained sixteen little guests Saturday, May 14, 1932, at her home on Walnut Street, from one until five o’clock in honor of her son, Leo Jr., who celebrated his sixth birthday anniversary. Favors were pink and green baskets containing nuts. A program of games were enjoyed and prizes were presented to Dorothy Fisher and Gene Suchora. The following were present: Rosemary Salvan, Norma Olson, Dorothy Olson, Betty Donnelly, Helen Tokarczyk, Dorothy Fisher, Lillian Fisher, Fannie Kubiak, Dorothy Dombuski, Stanley Kakol, Bobby Judge, Bobby O’Toole, Gene Suchora, Tommy Stimlinger, Junior Mozak and Junior Kubiak, Norma Olson was entertained at a birthday party at her home on Saturday, December 22, 1932, at her home. A program of games was enjoyed and favors were presented to each guest. Refreshments were served to fourteen guests. The little hostess was the recipient of many gifts.

Mrs. George Batesky, E. Oak St. entertained Wednesday, January 18, 1933, from four to six in the afternoon in honor of her daughter, Patricia Ann, who celebrated her sixth birthday. A program of games was enjoyed and lunch was served for eighteen little guests.

Jack Wisniewski entertained twenty of his little friends from 4 to 6 on Tuesday, September 6, 1933, to honor his fourth birthday. Games were enjoyed after which refreshments were served. The little host received many useful gifts.

Mrs. Harold Handley was hostess to the Jolly Eight Club at her home on Wayne Street on Thursday evening, April 20, 1933. Two tables of cards were in play. Mrs. Handley, Mrs. Francis Furman and Mrs. Robert McCarran received favors. Mrs. James Wisniewski of Pine Street was to be the next host.

Miss Stella Banka, Miss Katherine Piechota and Miss Sophie Mikoloczyk entertained at a variety shower on July 8, 1933, at Dom Polski Hall in honor of Miss Louise Gondek, bride elect. The evening was spent in dancing, music and games. Lunch was served, covers were marked for fifty guests. Miss Gondek was presented with many gifts. The marriage to Louis Klimczyk will take place on July 11, 1933.
Miss Katherine Henneman entertained the Les Cheres Amies Club at her home on E. Oak Street on July 21, 1933. Cards and dancing formed the evening entertainment. Favors in bridge were presented to Miss Jane Lee and Miss Alice Olson. The next hostess will be Miss Jean Ball.

Fifty couples honored Mrs. Joseph Anastasia at her home on W. Elm Street, on Thursday evening, February 15, 1934, in observance of her birthday anniversary. The affair was given by her daughters, Mrs. Anthony Bolognese of Buffalo and Mrs. James Melero of Olean. The house was prettily decorated in a color scheme of red and white in keeping with St. Valentine’s Day. The guest of honor was seated at a table centered with a birthday cake adorned with candles. A program of music was provided by Dominic Radio, Frank Morbito, Joseph Rosetti and Ralph Anastasia. Guests from out of town were Mrs. Anthony Bolognese, Miss Celia Bolognese, Mrs. L. Kistner and Charles Keitz.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Adamski entertained at their home on E. Oak Street on Monday, April 16, 1934 in compliment to their daughter Sophia, who observed her birthday. Cards and music were enjoyed during the evening. Favors were received by Misses Jane Wisniewski, Mary Budaj, Virginia Kaminski, Anna Kepec, Helen Piechota, Marie Petski, Mary Chipchak, Josephine Sroka, Florence Suchora, Jane Wisniewski and Wanda Wespasnik.

Mrs. Lucy Lane, Walnut Street, entertained at a dinner and a theater party, Wednesday afternoon, August 15, 1934, to honor her sisters, Mrs. Sarah Butler, Tulsa, Ok. And Mrs. John Phelan of Eldred. Among the guests were Mrs. Mary Moran, Mrs. John Flaim and Mrs. J. F. Gorton of Olean.

Mary Stavish was honored at a surprise birthday party at her home on E. Elm Street on March 4, 1935, by Miss Sophie Stavish and Frank Stavish. Seventeen couples were present and enjoyed a program of games and music. The house was prettily decorated in a color scheme of pink and blue. Miss Stavish was presented with a number of gifts.
Miss Mary Grear of Olean sang in the Opera “Aida” at the Buffalo Armory on Saturday, May 18, 1935. The opera was presented by Miss Bessie Belianca and was under the direction of Maurice Frank, the American impresario of New York. Miss Grear was a graduate of Olean High School the Class of 1934 and was now attending the school at Buffalo.

Mrs. Henry Schifley entertained ten little guests at her home on Connell St. on Thursday afternoon, January 16, 1936, in honor of her daughter Nancy Jane, who celebrated her fifth birthday. Games provided the afternoon’s entertainment. Lunch was served at a table centered with a birthday cake in a color motif of yellow and white. Each little guest was presented with a favor. Prizes were awarded to Betty Pfeiffer, Margaret Kosinski and Mary Theresa Schifley.
Mrs. Frank Kubiak, Oak Street, entertained a birthday party on Sunday afternoon, May 31, 1936, in honor of her daughter, Theresa Mae, who celebrated her fourth birthday. Those present were Rita and Donald Domboski, Theresa Sokolowski, Mary McCarthy, Janice Batesky, Phyllis Dohl, Rita Kako. Mary and Theresa Ballack, Dorothy Levandowski and Lorraine Eade.

Miss Amelia Padlo, Miss Helen Balcerzak and Miss Viola Clark gave Miss Josephine Mikoloczyk a variety shower at the Mikoloczyk home on N. Union St. August 21, 1936. Dancing and cards were enjoyed during the evening. Favor were won by Miss Florence Yonder, Mrs. Victoria McGraw, Mrs. J. M. Drake, Mrs. Mary Mater, Miss Della Rogosienski, Miss Carmelia Rosetti and Miss Sophie Skroback. A late supper was served to ninety guests.

Miss Florence Smith and Mrs. Anna Smith entertained at a variety shower on August 22, 1936, at the Smith residence on East. Forest Ave. in compliment of their sister, Miss Anna Smith, whose marriage will take place in September. Bingo was enjoyed during the evening and Mrs.George Bateski, Miss Ann Mack, Miss Florence Padlo and Miss Helen Kwiatkowski received honors. Thirty guests were served refreshments at a large table attractive in its decoration of pink and blue.
A bridal shower for Miss Anne Cullather of Olean was given by Miss Mary Curran of Dansville on the evening of Friday, February 26, 1937, at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Curran. The bride to be was the recipient of many beautiful and useful gifts. Favors were presented to Miss Marion Moore of Rochester, Miss Doris Boyce, Miss Verna Fish, Miss Alice Clemente, Miss Lillian Lent, Miss Anita Wirth and Miss Dorothy Moore. Miss Cullather’s marriage to Francis Patrick Connelly will take place on Tuesday, March 3, at St. John’s Church.
Miss Josephine Belvees and Miss Rose DeRose were hostesses on Tuesday evening, January 25, 1938, at a personal shower in honor of Miss Josephine DeCerbo. Games of skill and cards were enjoyed and favors were presented to Mrs. Anna Mack, L. F. Testi, Mrs. Mary Victor, Miss Mary Testi, Mrs. Sophie Neporadny, Miss Mafalda Ambrose, Miss Josephine Ambrose, Miss Josephine Erickson, Miss Connie Belvees, Miss Sabrina Kubiak, Miss Julia Seutbita, and Miss Lena DiCerbo. Refreshments were served later in the evening.

Miss Nora Ryan, 1126 River Street, celebrated her seventy fifth birthday on Monday, June 6, 1938. During the evening many friends of Miss Ryan called to extend their congratulations and good wishes.
Mrs. Thomas J. Gergel Jr. entertained twelve little guests at her home in compliment to her daughter, Constance Joan, on her birthday, January 23, 1939. Those in attendance were Paul Bush, Bobbie Kukulka, Robert Swartz, Joan Palko, Mary Bell, Donald Drake, Joan Yardman, Junior Gergel and Tony Bell. Games were enjoyed and awards presented to Rose Marie Swartz and Joan Yardman.

Mrs. A. J. Caputo, Washington Street, entertained on March 26, 1939, at a birthday party for her god-daughter Gloria Fote, who celebrated her tenth birthday. A theater party was held for eight guests who were later fated at a dinner at the Caputo home. Easter decorations in shades of lavender and yellow predominated the décor.

Miss Ann Bosko whose marriage to John Prymak will take place on Saturday was entertained at a variety shower by her sisters Miss Mary and Miss Helen Bosko at their Oak Street residence on January 29, 1940. Games were enjoyed and favors were awardd to Helen Kwiatkowski, Mrs. Joseph Woodgie, Mrs. Eugene Harrington, Miss Sabina Kubiak and Miss Virginia Splawski.

Miss Helen Piechota and Mrs. Anna Keller entertained on Wednesday evening, June 5, 1940, in compliment of Miss Sophie Skrobacz, a future bride, at the Washington Hall. Games of skill were played and awards were given to Miss Mary Gibbin, Helen Mechnica, Clara Piechota, Frances Rucinski, Anna Machnica, Mrs. Bernice Olson, Miss Arthemese Austin and Mrs Catherine Flicker. Refreshments were served to seventy-five guests. The tables were decorated in spring shades.
Mrs. Louis Veno entertained at her Spruce Street residence, Thursday evening, October 17, 1940 in celebration of her daughter Jennie’s birthday. Games and dancing were enjoyed and lunch for sixteen guests was served. Awards were given to Josephine Frungillo and Dolly DeCerbo.

Twenty guests of Mrs. Oliver Caya of River Street met at her home Monday evening, March 24, 1941, to honor her at a house warming party. Tables were arranged for games. Lunch was served at the tables decorated in patriotic theme. Mrs. John Hanobik was in charge of the party.

Miss Alice Olson was feted at a kitchen shower given by Miss Catherine Gill on Tuesday evening, May 20, 1941. Awards were given to Miss Olson, Miss Helen Hannigan, Mrs. Eber Bennett, Mrs. Lawrence Potter and Miss Jean Bell. Miss Olson will be the bride of John William Salmonson.

Miss Virginia Splawski was honored with a variety shower at her home on July 25, 1941, by hostesses Miss Martha Kasperski, Miss Lillian Kwiatkowska and Miss Helen Kwiatkowska. Games were played during the evening after which lunch was served on tables decorated with garden flowers. Guests attending from out of town were Mrs. Miller and Mrs. George Decker.
